We are pleased to announce that the Barracuda Web Application Firewall (WAF) has been recognized as a Challenger in the 2018 Gartner Magic Quadrant for Web Application Firewalls. We have details in the press release here.
What is the Gartner Magic Quadrant?
The Gartner Magic Quadrant (MQ) is an enterprise-focused and easily recognizable, graphical representation of an IT market or segment and is one of the most influential analyst reports published today. It allows for a vendor landscape to be consumed “at a glance” and it is generally the report of choice for many, from c-suite executives to product managers, to quickly gain insight into who the major players are. Vendors are ranked on two axis: Completeness of Vision (solution strategy, roadmap, and future potential) and Ability to Execute (how does the vendor perform against that strategy, including revenue and market share totals) and placed into one of four quadrants ranging from Leaders (upper right) to Niche (lower left).

Using the Gartner Magic Quadrant to choose a vendor
That said, many end users will use only those vendors in the Leaders quadrant to compile a shortlist of prospective IT vendors. Gartner itself would advise that this strategy is incorrect, as a simple graphic does not convey the complexities and subtleties each solution brings to the market. Remember that the Magic Quadrant is an ENTERPRISE FOCUSED report and by shortlisting only Leaders, you may find yourself paying for features and functionalities that you won’t use or need. A vendor or solution is much more than the dot represented or its placement and being able to digest the entire report is absolutely key to unlocking its full value. Being recognized as a Challenger in this highly competitive market aligns perfectly with our strategy of challenging the WAF market by providing enterprise-class application security coupled with differentiators that help our IT and budget constrained customers of all sizes to ensure their applications are protected.
Gartner Magic Quadrant and the Barracuda WAF
To give one example, our customers using public cloud platforms to power their applications have come to expect a solution that seamlessly integrates with the native services and licenseless billing options available to them. Barracuda was recognized by Gartner for having “good visibility for its WAF deployments over IaaS”. Furthermore, application developers building apps natively in public cloud require a WAF with a robust feature-complete REST API that enables integration with existing infrastructure automation tools. The Barracuda WAF is the only comprehensive WAF in the market that’s specifically architected for public cloud deployments. The free Barracuda Vulnerability Remediation Service will automatically scan your applications and patch them as needed. Additionally, application scanning has traditionally been a time-consuming task that required end-user organizations to have dedicated resources (both money and expertise) to protect against an attack or exploit. Gartner gave high marks to Barracuda for the Vulnerability Remediation Service (VRS), a free Barracuda WAF add-on that allows customers to automatically scan applications for vulnerabilities that can be exploited by attackers. Not only will VRS scan your applications, but it can then virtually patch them and ensure your applications are one less attack vector for you to worry about.
The Barracuda Web Application Firewall is a comprehensive web application security platform that secures your apps, defends against bots and DDoS attacks, and accelerates application delivery. By combining both positive signature-based policies with robust anomaly detection capabilities, Barracuda WAF can defeat today’s most sophisticated attacks targeting your web applications.
