Sun Basket is a San Francisco-based subscription meal delivery service that ships members fresh organic and sustainable ingredients and recipes every week. They have 1200+ employees and with facilities across the country. Sun Basket is swiftly emerging as a leader in the fast-growing market for meal-kit subscriptions.
Like many fast-growing organizations with multiple sites, Sun Basket decided that the flexibility and dynamic scaling capabilities inherent in Amazon Web Services (AWS) would make it an excellent platform for hosting their workloads. However, security quickly emerged as a challenge for their internal infrastructure integration.
“We had Meraki firewalls set up at multiple locations to secure our on-premises applications—ERP and so on,” says Timothy Dorcas, the company’s IT manager. “We were trying to establish site-to-site VPN tunnels from multiple locations to our AWS infrastructure, but we couldn’t get it to work. Basically, the Meraki firewalls only allowed one site to site VPN connection to AWS. And that limited our ability to properly access our AWS infrastructure internally.“
After working with a couple of vendors, Tim contacted Barracuda. Barracuda’s dedicated Cloud Security Solution Architect (CSSA) assessed the situation, and proposed using Barracuda NextGen Firewalls deployed on AWS. Barracuda NextGen Firewalls have advanced VPN capabilities that make it simple to create multiple tunnels to the same public IP with different Security Associations.
“We decided to give that a try,” says Tim, “and it worked like a charm. The Barracuda firewall had no trouble setting up IPsec VPN tunnels directly to the Meraki firewalls at all of our sites. And it was really easy to do! Once the template is created, setting up the remaining VPN tunnels was literally a point-and-click exercise. Barracuda made it possible for us to meet our connectivity and security requirements. Without them, we might have had to re-think our decision to use AWS for one of our primary systems.”
At Barracuda, we pride ourselves on our expertise in securing cloud deployments, and especially in configuring security solutions for hybrid environments that encompass both cloud and on-premises environments. As Tim Dorcas and Sun Basket discovered, we also commit ourselves to solving customer problems quickly and creatively.
As Tim puts it, “Barracuda came to our rescue. Their cloud experts evaluated our challenge, and after just three phone calls, everything was resolved. Thanks to Barracuda, Sun Basket now has the resources and infrastructure we need to remain highly competitive in this dynamic, fast-changing industry.”
