Q & A on Barracuda solutions for Amazon Web Services

We recently attended the AWS Summit in New York, where we had the opportunity to chat with partners and customers about the challenges they face with public cloud deployments. We also launched Barracuda NG Firewall as an hourly and annual service via the AWS Marketplace, and refreshed our corporate AWS website with more resources and information. In this blog post, we talk to Amy Bray, Senior Cloud Product Marketing Manager at Barracuda. Amy answers our questions on Amazon Web Service's solutions, our history with AWS, and more.

What is the history of Barracuda with AWS? 

We have been working with AWS for several years, and we recently achieved AWS APN Advanced Technology Partner status. We chose to work with AWS because they are a leader in public cloud, true technology innovators, and our customers wanted to run Barracuda solutions on AWS. We are excited about providing customers with the same enterprise-grade security they’re used to, but in a highly flexible and scalable environment on AWS. Our goal is to provide a frictionless and powerful user experience.

How does the customer benefit from the Barracuda and AWS partnership?

We currently offer four products on AWS: Barracuda Web Application Firewall, Barracuda NG Firewall, Barracuda Email Security Gateway, and Barracuda Load Balancer ADC. All of these products are available hourly/annually through the AWS Marketplace and BYOL. We are unique in that we offer a wide variety of enterprise-grade security products, spanning from application security, to network security, to email security – we cover multiple threat vectors.

Being a top tier APN Technology Partner means that our products meet the AWS advanced criteria and provide customers with a truly easy-to-use and powerful solution in the AWS Cloud.

We recently announced that Barracuda NG Firewall is available as an hourly and annual offering in the AWS Marketplace. What does this mean for our customers? 

AWS Marketplace is an online store that helps customers find, buy and immediately start using software and services they need with 1-Click deployment. This allows customers to pay as they go, scaling usage up and down based on changing business needs. Using this model, AWS handles the billing and payments – charges appear consolidated on customers’ AWS bill. The nice thing about this is that it requires little to no cost up front, which means that it's perfect for proof-of-concept runs and other trials. It also means that technology managers do not have to do any tedious calculations or long-term projection in terms of service needs.

Pay-as-you-go licenses include very little management for the customer. AWS handles all of the metering and billing; the customer has no perpetual licensing fees or long-term contract to monitor. We want customers to understand that threat protection is a critical part of their AWS infrastructure.

The AWS Marketplace makes it easy to deploy solutions on-demand, and our pay-as-you-go licensing makes it just as easy for customers to add threat protection to those solutions, as needed.

We recently announced participation in the AWS Marketplace Consulting Partner Program.  What does this mean for customers?

AWS has two partner programs, Technology Partners and Consulting Partners. Our participation in the AWS Marketplace Consulting Partner Program helps our channel partners deliver Barracuda solutions on AWS.   AWS Consulting Partners can help customers design, architect, build, migrate, and manage their workloads and applications on AWS. We have access to extensive resources that help our customers deploy, run, and manage applications in the AWS cloud. The program also ensures that we have demonstrated proficiency in AWS Marketplace software and the AWS platform.

Additionally, Amazon Consulting Partners are in the AWS Marketplace database, where customers can search for them based on location and expertise. This makes it easier for customers to discover and contact service providers who can help them with their specific needs.

How does Barracuda / AWS help customers migrate to the cloud? 

Moving, migrating, or starting fresh in the cloud is easy with AWS and Barracuda. We provide a full suite of solutions that are flexible and easy to use. Customers can choose how to put AWS to work for them, and rest assured that they are protected with the same award-winning security solutions they would use in an on-premises environment.

Our solutions reside in the top level of the AWS Shared Security Model. Put simply, AWS secures their platform (security OF the cloud) and Barracuda helps customers secure anything built on top of, or attached to, AWS (security IN the cloud). Huge operational efficiencies can be gained in a shared security model with AWS and Barracuda. One of the most appreciated benefits is that customers who want to migrate to the AWS cloud in whole or in part can do so easily with their Barracuda solutions. There is no need to learn a new skill set or new product. And because of our proficiencies with AWS, we can help our customers meet any challenges that come along.
