About Conservas El Cidacos S.A.
Since founded in 1940, the Spanish company, Conservas El Cidacos (Cidacos ) has been providing the highest quality canned and jarred vegetables. The group’s goal is to achieve complete customer satisfaction, which requires fresh raw materials. The company needed to expand to areas with the best produce to achieve optimal quality. Cidacos International added several locations in Peru and China to their locations in Spain to ensure a fresh supply of raw materials.
The Problem
The main issue IT Manager Francisco Garcia was struggling with was not the size of the company, but its widely distributed network of warehouses and manufacturing plants. The systems in place (NetScreen, Juniper, Microsoft ISA Server Firewall, and WebSense) worked as intended but evolving requirements concerning management capabilities, Quality of Service, user awareness, and application control required an integrated, more robust solution be put in place.
The Search
Conservas El Cidacos’ research included almost all leading brands. Some brands offered reasonable feature sets and performance but at very high investment costs. Others came with affordable pricing but lacked essential features and/or acceptable performance.
Cidacos was already familiar with Barracuda since it’s been a Barracuda customer since 2007 when it implemented the Barracuda SSL VPN. Over the years, it added the Barracuda Message Archiver, the Barracuda Link Balancer, and the Barracuda Load Balancer ADC. Now, Garcia decided to add the Barracuda NG Firewall as well.

According to Garcia, the Barracuda NG Firewall test deployment returned very good results and offered high reliability. The VPN capabilities, Quality of Service features, and high availability option, and affordable price made the decision to go with the Barracuda NG Firewall and ditch their previous inefficient, multi-vendor approach, easy. Another reason for choosing the Barracuda NG Firewalll was the dedicated support provided by the award-winning Barracuda Customer Support Team based in Austria. And, Garcia adds, “One of the advantages of the Barracuda NG Firewall is the consistent functionality over all model sizes and the performance of the hardware.”
The Project
As a first step, Cidacos improved their intranet by adding central management and VPN. Additionally, Quality of Service levels for applications and protocols were implemented.
Finally, the Barracuda NG Firewalls were rolled out in each factory, warehouse, and headquarters to secure the internal VLANs and add Application Control. Implementing URL filtering and SSL inspection, as well as, securing the perimeter, concluded the project. Garcia summarizes the deployment: “Any issue was solved in a smooth and quick way.”
The Benefits
The centralized management via the Barracuda NG Control Center, as well as, the real-time analysis and high availability across the entire distributed network was key for Conservas El Cidacos. This, in combination with the scalability of a Barracuda NG deployment, the extensive options, the analysis tools, comprehensive reporting, and the unrivaled BYOD (Bring Your Own Device) capabilities made it clear the decision to implement the Barracuda NG Firewall and the Barracuda NG Control Center was the right one.
“The hardware refresh program available with the Barracuda Instant Replacement subscription is definitely worth going for. Along with providing replacement units in case of equipment failures, it provides ongoing migration to the latest hardware platforms after four years at no additional cost,” says Garcia.
